Plain Language – An Introduction

CPD
A webinar with Dr Antoinique van Staden

In a world where globalisation and cross collaboration are increasingly connecting global communities, Plain Language is becoming a non-negotiable skill. However, what is Plain Language? More importantly, what is it not?

In this introductory webinar, learn more about the benefits of incorporating Plain Language strategies for effective communication. The webinar will also focus on some of the challenges that you will face as a language practitioner developing your own Plain Language skills. We will discuss criticisms of Plain Language and possible ways to address clients’ resistance to the movement. Is Plain Language unprofessional writing? What do clients expect? How do you deliver on this expectation?

The webinar will include a Q & A session.

Dr Antoinique van Staden is a language practitioner specialising in Plain Language editing and completed her PhD in 2022. Her focus was on interdisciplinary science communication and how using Plain Language principles can aid scientists and engineers in writing funding proposals. She has been working with engineers on developing writing and communicating skills since 2016. Making sure that the message of a document is always as clear as possible means that a language practitioner’s first duty is towards the reader.

She has presented on the topic of Plain Language at several conferences:

  • Women in Science Without Borders – March 2018
  • SATI Third Triennial Conference – September 2018.
  • SATI Fourth Triennial Conference – September 2023
